Allison Oswald's daily life is never short of adventure. She is a dedicated Mother to two darling boys and wife to an accomplished animation production designer. She is the owner + founder of Plumb Line Pilates in Santa Monica and a sought out expert of Women's Health. Oh, and she is an absolute delight to be around - always a listener + cares about each person she comes into contact with. Santa Monica is the place she has called home for many years and lucky for us, she is sharing her favorite local spots for our latest installation of the Summer Community Guide.
TOP OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES:
Will Rogers State Park is our #1 choice. It’s huge, with tons of grassy spaces and a hike that young kids can manage pretty well. And if you’re lucky you might get to watch a little polo or at least go visit the horses. (we buy the annual parking pass which pays for itself - we go so often, and supports our national parks)
My favorite place for a beautiful walk is Mandeville Canyon – because they have wide roads perfect for a walk with the stroller! (and you can park on the street leading up to the hike or at the base for free)
Annenberg Beach House in the late afternoon/early evening…the kids get to play on the beach park toys while Mom and Dad can get dinner ordered at Back on the Beach (still close enough to watch the kids). And once dinner comes, it’s fun for everyone because you’re eating on the sand and watching that Santa Monica sunset. (easy and close parking)
PLAYING TOURIST IN YOUR HOMETOWN: The Santa Monica Pier is one of our favorite places to go. It’s so iconic and if you live locally, it’s easy to dismiss since it can seem overcrowded and too touristy. But it is just so fun, and that view from the top of the ferris wheel is not to be missed. I actually love feeling like a tourist in my own town…aren’t we lucky to live in a place people choose as their vacation destination?!
The best time to go is early in the morning, beat those crazy crowds and we’re all up anyways…am I right?
THE NOTORIOUS MARKET: Not too far from the pier is the Santa Monica Farmers Market on Arizona Avenue between 4th & Ocean and it's awesome. The kids like to bring their own baskets and pick out snacks for themselves. Then we walk out to the bluff overlooking the ocean to eat our fruit, drink our coffee and play.
FAVORITE SPOTS FOR FAMILY BITES: We love R & D Kitchen. Pete (my husband) and I tend to share an appetizer to graze on with a cocktail for weekend dinners. So since they serve a perfect Shirley Temple and shoestring apple fries for the kids, it makes them feel a part of the fun too! We also get them the deviled eggs and dip duo…which we love too. But if we’re sitting down for a proper dinner, their veggie burger or chicken sandwich are a must for the adults. And the boys love their grilled chicken and broccoli! (Note: metered street parking)
A close second is Blue Plate Taco. Tacos, quesadillas, guacamole, beans and rice…but fresh and delicious - need I say more?! The atmosphere is fun, especially outside on the patio where you can watch the sunset, see the pier ferris wheel and cozy up with a blanket they provide for you when it gets a little chilly after the sun sets. (Note: valet parking)
